Plasma Nitriding
Plasma Nitriding Technology

Plasma nitriding is an advanced surface treatment process conducted in a nitrogen-based gas atmosphere (0.1–10 Pa). When a high DC voltage is applied—with the furnace acting as the anode and the workpiece as the cathode—a glow discharge occurs, enveloping the part in a soft neon-like light.
Ionized gas particles are accelerated toward the component surface, generating heat and initiating a nitriding reaction through ion bombardment and sputtering. This physical interaction differs fundamentally from traditional nitriding methods using ammonia or cyanide compounds.
Due to its precision, cleanliness, and environmental benefits, plasma nitriding is increasingly applied across industries—including automotive components, precision machinery, injection molds, and tool steels.

Originally invented in Germany in 1932 and commercialized in the late 1960s, plasma nitriding began gaining attention as a next-generation heat treatment method.
NDK recognized its potential early and launched independent R&D, completing our first in-house unit in 1972—becoming the first company in Japan to manufacture and offer contract processing using plasma nitriding systems.
Our JIN Series has since become a globally recognized solution, with proven results in both domestic and overseas markets. It is trusted for its operational stability, user-friendly design, and long-term reliability.
We also provide customers with customized processing know-how, based on a wealth of technical data, and maintain a comprehensive after-sales support system.
The JIN-3SC model is a mid-sized production unit widely used by industrial clients. It features a fully automated, computer-controlled interface that improves precision while simplifying operation. Operators can monitor all conditions in real time via an intuitive screen, enabling consistent and efficient processing.
Settings for various treatments can be stored and reused. Optional pulse power supplies (available on models like JIN-3S and JIN-10S) further enhance performance for sensitive applications such as plastic molds or precision components.

Key Advantages of Plasma Nitriding
Eco-Friendly & Clean : No chemical reactions involved — just pure ionized nitrogen gas. No exhaust treatment systems needed. Safe, clean, and operator-friendly.
Faster Turnaround :Ion sputtering drastically shortens processing time compared to traditional nitriding. Higher productivity, lower downtime.
Uniform Heating, No Extra Equipment : Glow discharge ensures even temperature without external heaters or insulation. Simple setup, consistent quality.
Double the Efficiency : More than twice the thermal efficiency of conventional heating methods. Cut energy use, boost sustainability.
Cost-Saving Operation : Minimal gas usage means lower running costs without compromising performance.
Wide Temperature Range : Nitriding from 380 °C — up to 850 °C for titanium and special alloys. Versatility for diverse applications.
Flawless Surface Finish : Vacuum processing produces oxidation-free, low-roughness surfaces. Ideal for high-spec, final-stage parts. No post-processing needed.
Precision-Controlled Properties : Fine-tune gas ratios (H₂, N₂, mixed) to customize compound layer characteristics for targeted mechanical performance.
